Html5 main section. Recently it was added to the html5 specification following no objections. The main tag specifies the main content of a document. The main tag is actually a new addition to the html5 specification.

Section article aside hgroup header footer nav figure and figcaption. There must not be more than one main element in a document. The content inside the main element should be unique to the document.

The html main element represents the dominant content of the body of a document. There are another 20 or so. The html section element represents a standalone section which doesn t have a more specific semantic element to represent it contained within an html document.

This tag is essentially a wrapper tag that goes around your content. Html5 introduced just nine new structural tags and they ve been stable for several years. It should not contain any content that is repeated across documents such as sidebars navigation links copyright information site logos and search forms.

The proposal was accepted in november 2012 and main was then rolled into the html5 1 specification. Main is one of 9 structural tags that were introduced in the html 5 specification. Any content that is repeated on multiple pages logos search boxes footer links etc should not be placed within the main element.

It allows the screen reading device to detect and find the important content rapidly while it skips over the code at the top of the file. The main element should contain the main content for your web page.
